Metallurgical Institute "Kemal Kapetanovic" Zenica acts as a scientific and research organization for 50 years, and was set up at the moment when it was obvious that rapid growth of production and requirements in the technology of steel production in Željezara Zenica seek greater participation of scientific research then  it was possible to organize within the existing Department of technical control of the mill. Headed by PH.D.. Kemal Kapetanovic, as a proponent of its establishing in 1961 it started its  work with a great perspective huge local expectations.

Special attention was dedicated to process of setting up the basic concept of the Institute's research .  As dominant orientation of  the Institute in its development prevailed focus on training in the application of research and development of character for ferrous metallurgy, primarily Željezara Zenica. This concept enabled the Institute faster resolution of issues involved in production, and the orientation and program did not come into conflict with other research centers in the former Yugoslavia. For such decision Institute had role models in Western European countries with developed metallurgy.

A year after its establishment, in 1962 The Institute was moved to a new, current location, building of fire-proof dome that was renovated for that purpose.

The funds needed for renovation and equipment were provided from Željezara Zenica  and loans of Federal funds for scientific work. After that, according to a prepared investment program and project documentation, a gradual approach to the construction and equipping of the Institute started.
The initial organization of the Institute was adjusted for functions of research, where they have established three basic types of formations: offices, laboratories and institutes. Later, the organization was adjusted according to the needs.
Perspective by the Agreement on NIR should ensure the proper growth of the funds on the basis of allocation for scientific research has not been provided, which directly affected the operations of the Institute.

Emphasized  need for elimination of  the problems noticed in the plan of organization of the Institute  and reduction of  the irrationality has launched a campaign, and during the 1987 until Jan.1st in 1988 it was done on its change. On the  Business of the  Institute  particularly negative effect was cessation of functioning SOUR RMK and the loss of the largest clients and financiers of the Institute as well as the dramatically worsening of economic situation, especially in the sphere of ferrous metallurgy in this period. In order to adjust to the system of law of that period (Law on Enterprises, Law on social capital) and to the requirements of market economy the Institute in 1991, started an action on the constitution of the Institute as a joint stock company with mixed ownership through the issuance of internal shares.

Difficult period after the war in 1995 and after that has brought further challenges to the Institute  in the fight for survival. Human resources as a key resource of scientific and research institutions were extremely weakened due to the inability of existing education and ensuring the arrival of new personnel. New  time has brought changes that significantly affected the operations of the Institute. Change of  the social system, way of doing business and the transition from planned to market economy forced the Institute to focus on fighting for its survival. This was a time when only few people cared about science or anything that was not required by law. Just then, the Institute has demonstrated its strength and it found a way to survive on the market by listening and adapting to market  requirements.

Although it was a difficult period for the Institute, enthusiasm and knowledge of employees were focused on development of the Institute in strengthening business relationships with small and medium-sized enterprises and in solving their problems. In this direction in 1997 was brought a decision on setting up projects for introducing quality management systems in the laboratories of the Institute according to EN 45001, and to build Internet node. In this way the Institute has entered a new phase in its development, and again it showed a willingness for new ventures and adjustments to requirements of the environment what justifies the purpose of existence.

Period of operation of the Institute from 1998 to 2006 is characterized by awareness of the role and importance of the Institute for the economy of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which resulted in the first accreditation by the European standards and the growing interest of small and medium enterprises for the services of the Institute in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region. Institute in this period renewed its business contact with large systems such as Elektoprivreda, Power plants and BH Steel to resume a modest investment in the purchase of more modern equipment and training personnel.

Zenica-Doboj Canton, as the owner of capital,at the Assembly held onSept.25th in 2006 by decision  01-38-20048/06 took over the rights and obligations of the founders of MI "Kemal Kapetanović" Zenica and established its status as an organizational unit of the University in which it works today. By this act the Institute entered  scientific,  research and educational institution with the aim of connecting science, education and economy.

In the period from 2006 to 2011, the Institute has been  involved in projects funded by enterprises and large systems in cooperation with other organizational units of the University.This way of working presents more rational use of University resources. In addition, the Institute is actively involved in projects of European Union as a partner or participant applying to the tender, and in that way it draws attention to the existence, capabilities, and the importance of this institution.

Policy management is based on strengthening human resources,so a larger number of younger employees start post graduate studies and work on doctoral dissertations. The Institute is ready to cooperate with communities of interest in the environment, and actively participates in projects of the Employment office on accepting young personnel for apprenticeship. This combination of  young and active personnel and experience and knowledge of older personnel creates a new space for the development of thoughts, ideas and business. Road  to modern and successful Institute and to a leading institution in the field of scientific and research activities and identifiable guide and partner with small and medium enterprises that will jointly work to strengthen the innovation and development of the required products and services, is the road that the Institute has just appointed as its vision and mission.
2011 is marked as a significant year in which the Institute celebrates the fiftieth anniversary. If we consider circumstances and the environment in which it worked, tthose were 50 years of a very successful business. It is certain to say that the Institute has left its mark on the historical period 1961-2011 indicating that the power of knowledge, will and persistence is inevitable for the development of companies and enterprises.
